Bank of Italy Proposes Tokenized SEPA System to Modernize EU Payments
Europe's payment infrastructure stands at a crossroads. Chiara Scotti, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Italy, has championed a tokenized iteration of the SEPA system—a move poised to amplify the euro's relevance in digital finance. With SEPA processing €116 trillion in cashless transactions in H1 2025, tokenization is no longer speculative but a strategic imperative.
The proposal emerges as the digital euro undergoes ECB testing. Scotti's vision leverages existing frameworks rather than awaiting disruptive innovations, positioning Europe to compete in the global race for monetary digitization.
